| Interpretation | During World War II, Burma was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 until the return of the Allied forces in 1945. The first Japanese ground action in Burma was in December 1941. By January 15, 1942 the Japanese held three airfields from which they were able to fly fighter escorts for the bombers attacking the strategic port of Ramgoon, which was then under British rule. The Baluch Regiment of India was among the Allied forces fighting to free Burma from the Japanese occupation. The small port of Martaban on the Gulf of Martaban in Burma (now known as Myanmar) is famous for its glazed pottery. Queen Victoria established the Distinguised Service Order (referred to in this poster) in 1886. It is awarded to military officers for individual instances of meritorious or distinguished service in war. |
