Title | Back them up!: a British 'commando' raid on a German-held port in Norway |
Description | Poster, color, 20 x 30 in., printed in England by Fosh & Cross Ltd. |
Interpretation | The government of Norway had declared that country's neutrality in the fall of 1939, when the second world war broke out. Their military forces were geared toward protecting their borders and preventing violations of the country's neutrality. Norway's neutrality proved to be of little use when the Germans attacked on April 9, 1940. In 1940 alone the British lost 4000 lives in battle trying to prevent the German occupation of Norway - all to no avail as the Germans succeeded in occupying Norway from 1940-1945 (although not without strong and continued resistance from the Norwegians.)
