Title | Painting: Illinois Landscape #90 |
Description | A painting of a panoramic view of gently rolling, rich farmland in early springtime. Hedgerows of trees along some field edges, clumps of trees at other places, farmhouse in background towards right end of painting. Dimensions are 12" x 96". |
Interpretation | This long, narrow work is characteristic of Gregor's "signature" landscape paintings that serve to emphasize the wide, flat landscape of central Illinois. The viewer experiences the painting the way one drives past an actual landscape, with a continuous glance moving across the canvas. Gregor, accepted as the current "Dean of Illinois landscape painting", is retired from teaching art at Illinois State University. Throughout his career he has been preoccupied with natural light on the land and with the flatness of the land. He works primarily from photographs, creating a highly realistic depiction through his exacting painterly technique. The details he emphasizes makes the viewer see the subject in a new way. Human figures never appear in his works, but the changes humans make to the land are clearly visible in the cultivated fields and the buildings. Gregor also paints works based on aerial photographs of farmsteads and has executed a number of murals in public buildings. |
