Title | Painting: Autumn Trees and Green Roofs |
Description | A painting of a farmstead set along an unpaved road within a gently rolling landscape, all depicted in soft, muted tones of blue, green and grey. Dimensions are 30" x 50". |
Interpretation | Each element of the painting is presented as a flat plane of color, with shading to suggest the three dimensionality of the forms. The use of a limited palette of few colors emphasizes the sense of flat color shapes in which it has been abstracted. Abstract art was perhaps the most significant contribution of 20th century artists to the history of art. The exploratoin of nonnaturalistic art began in the early 20th century by artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. By the 1950s artists such as Mark Rothko reduced forms to a few simple shapes on their canvases, leading to the minimal art of the 1960s and 1970s. Moehl, like many other Midwestern artists, was a product of his time yet held onto the landscape tradition in his art. Moehl was a native of Ohio. He taught at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. |
