Letter from Jonathan Baldwin Turner to Hon. J.P. Reynolds, circa 1860s
Creator
Turner, Jonathan Baldwin
Date
186u
Decade
1860s
Description
Turner writes to introduce Reynolds to Julian M. Sturtevant, an early President of Illinois College. He urges support from Reynolds, as well as Gerard Fuller, to keep supporting his cause. Turner insists that he cannot give up his dream of a public college. Turner alludes that the Chicago Tribune published on their cause, using Turner's arguments nearly word for word. He believes this support can influence the Chicago Committee to join the educational cause. He writes, "I have better and brighter hope now that we shall and we will create a University worthy of the name and the state in which it stands." Turner continues to garner support to see his dream of a University fulfilled. He writes, "the word 'fail' has never yet be written in any of the dictionaries of our new University." Turner urges Reynolds to write a bill to propose to the Legislative Committee.
