| Description | Pierced tin lantern with a white and black streaked horn window on a hinged door. Cylindrical body with a flat base and cone-shaped crown of pierced tin. Ribbed flat tin bracket and loop riveted to bracket on the top. 14.5" high. |
| Interpretation | This lantern was probably made between 1775 and 1825. It is made out of tin which has been pierced to let the light shine through. The window in the hinged door is made out of animal horn. The lantern is lit by a single candle. Lanterns like this one were used like portable flashlights. The candle supplied the light, and the tin covering and window kept the candle from blowing out. Although lanterns like this one were fairly common during the American Revolution, Paul Revere would have used one with glass doors which would show more light. |
