Description | An oil painting on canvas by Childe Hassam of the Palace of Fine Arts building at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. The painting measures thirty-five inches by forty-one inches. |
Interpretation | The subject of The Palace of Fine Arts, an oil painting by the American Impressionist painter Childe Hassam (1859-1935), is the fine arts building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Hassam studied in Boston and Paris where he was influenced by the Impressionists and took to painting in brilliant color with touches of pure pigment. While many of his works are of New England landscapes, he was familiar with the great International Exposition in Paris and was well suited to interpret in paint the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Palace of Fine Arts later became Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. |
