Title | Wright Brothers Model B Airplane Engine |
Description | The Wright Brothers Model B Airplane Engine is a vertical, four-cylinder, water-cooled, inline, reciprocating engine [a reciprocating engine converts energy from fuel to mechanical motion by driving the pistons back and forth]. The Wright Brothers airplane engine drives two chain-driven propellers. The engine's four cylinders are bolted to the top of the engine block. The engine consists of cylinders, pistons, a connecting rod, a crankshaft, and a camshaft. |
Interpretation | The Wright Brothers Model B Airplane Engine is the very first airplane engine model approved by the United States Government and purchased for military aviation use. Orville Wright (1868-1956) and engineer Charles E. Taylor (1868-1956) were the primary designers of this aviation engine. This Wright engine marked the very first time that Orville and Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) did not collaborate on a project. The one-piece engine block design used in their 1903 Flyer was abandoned for a more powerful design. The Wright's produced one hundred or so Model B engines. This was the only Wright engine model sold to the military. |
