Interpretation | Boston architect Julius A. Schweinfurth designed the 1896 Burnham Athenaeum in the popular Beaux-Arts style, which he had studied in France. Albert C. Burnham gave the site and $35,000 to erect the new library. (It was then housed in City Hall.) He added a $10,000 endowment for library materials. Discontinued as a library in 1979, the building was purchased from the city and remodeled for use as law offices. It is listed on both the Illinois Register and the National Register of Historic Places. |
