Title | Americans! Share the meat as a wartime necessity |
Description | Poster, color (all lettered), 21 x 28 in., published by the United States Government Printing Office |
Interpretation | Many food items, such as sugar, butter, red meat, coffee, and chocolate were rationed to ensure that the troops had enough food to eat. The supply of red meat became a particular problem as increasing amounts were sent to feed both American and Allied troops around the world. The government set the standards for an individual's basic requirements and ration stamps were issued accordingly. This poster alerts consumers to those basic requirements so they were able to use their meat rations wisely. Food rationing during World War II provide an impetus for the development of a new food classification system, and in 1943 the "Basic Seven" food guide was promoted as a means of selecting alternatives to common foods that were in limited supply. |
