Interpretation | The Philippines fell to the Japanese in 1942, as U.S. forces on Bataan surrendered uncondiitonally on April 9. This poster was hung in many libraries at that time, to remind Americans that our freedom of speech and thought are precious rights. The Nazi policy referred to in the text was the censorship of ideas embodied by their massive propaganda campaign that began with the burning of books in 1933. For more infomration about Nazi censorship, see the interpretation for the poster "Books Cannot Be Killed by Fire, Books are Weapons in the War of Ideas". |
