Engraving of woman wearing a Zouave Neglige
Description
  • with it is worn a shirt with plaited linen bosom, and fancy silk necktie. Tuscan braid hat trimmed in black velvet and straw. Taken from “Godey’s Lady’s Book,” vol. 63 (July, 1861). Dimensions: 5.5"x9.5".
  • The jacket and skirt are of white pique, trimmed with two rows of very narrow colored braid. As the jacket is only intended for morning wear, it is much longer than the ordinary Zouave
Interpretation
The Zouave uniform of a Civil War soldier was a dashing outfit with a short jacket and loose-fitting red trousers. The woman’s jacket in this illustration is an adaptation of a soldier’s jacket. For a view of a typical Zouave uniform see "Plate of Three Civil War Soldiers Dressed in Zouave Uniforms
