Title | George Washington |
Coverage-Year | 1776 to Present |
Description | Portrait by Gilbert Stuart of George Washington at Dorchester Heights, 1806 |
Interpretation | In the Spring of 1776, George Washington and his troops seized Dorchester Heights (now South Boston), placing three cannon in the range of Boston. This caused the British troops to evacuate Boston Harbor. Many Loyalists (people who were loyal to the British rule) left with the troops and never returned. Thirty years later Gilbert Stuart was commissioned to commemorate the event and completed this painting in nine days. The scene is idealized. Washington is given the heroic pose of the Apollo Belvidere, a famous classical statue. He appears considerably older, thus more presidential, than he was at the battle.
