| Interpretation | This screwdriver was made in the Chesebro Blacksmith Shop in Saunemin, Illinois. Ralph and Elmer Chesebro operated the shop and repaired buggies, shoed horses, and sharpened plows. They were also capable of making a tool for any task. Factory-made screwdrivers were easily available, but Ralph and Elmer probably made this one for a special project they were working on. Blacksmithing was a profession that required broad knowledge and flexibility--and was very different from today's machine processes. The Early American Museum has a substantial amount of information about the Chesebro shop and blacksmithing in general. |
