Interpretation | Rationing of gasoline and rubber for tires led to the increased use of mass transportation by civilians in World War II. Transportation of military personnel and munitions was the top priority for mass transportation providers, particularly the railroads. By 1944 railroads were responsible for 72 percent of the wartime transportation in the United States. Although travel was never rationed, civilians were asked to voluntarily limit their travel to "essential" trips and to vacation at home. Other posters on this topic are: "Me Travel?"
