Title | Silver' Penny, 1863 |
Coverage-Year | 1863 |
Description | The profile of an Indian maiden wearing a headdress, with "United States of America," around the edge, and the date, 1863, underneath. |
Interpretation | During the Civil War, coins were hoarded and even cents became scarce. Coins of lighter weight and substitute materials were tried. There was even an attempt to use postage stamps for money. This coin might be one issued in 1863 made of aluminum as an experiment by James Barton Longacre, the Mint engraver at the time. Source | These coins came from a copper box placed in the Champaign City Building when it was built in 1889. The box contained some small articles and documents. When a new Champaign City Building was dedicated in 1938, additional articles were added to the box and it was placed behind a bronze plaque in the new lobby. In 1998, the box was retrieved and the contents examined. Some of the items will be returned to a time capsule to be placed in the city building. |
