Title | John F. Kennedy Half-Dollar, 1964 |
Description | The left-facing profile of President Kennedy is shown in a simple design with LIBERTY overhead, IN GOD WE TRUST just under the President's image, and the date along the bottom edge. |
Interpretation | The assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963 stimulated public feeling for a coin with his image. The portrait was designed by Gilroy Roberts, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint. On some coins his initials GR appear on the obverse. Roberts resigned in October 1964. During the Bicentennial the date on the obverse was altered to read 1776-1976. The composition of the coin has been altered several times.
