Title | Susan B. Anthony Dollar, 1979 |
Description | A right-facing profile of the suffragette is surrounded by a circle of thirteen stars the word LIBERTY, to the right, IN GOD WE TRUST, and below the date. |
Interpretation | The artist for the coin's design was Frank Gasparro, chief engraver for the United States Mint. His initials can be seen just below the collar of Susan B. Anthony. The Mint mark, a D for Denver, is located to the left of the image. The Susan B. Anthony dollar was introduced in 1979. The supply of coins was exhausted in 2000. The coin was never widely circulated. It's size made it easy to confuse with a quarter, although it is slightly larger in dimension. The coin is round, but crimping of the rim makes it appear as it is is angular. Susan B. Anthony was born in 1820 and died in 1906. She was a Quaker, an avid abolitionist, a labor activist, a temperance worker, and a tireless campaigner for women's rights. She had the courage to speak out for her beliefs, even to be arrested for them. She came to believe that the key to equal rights for women lay in the power of the vote. She did not live to see the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. It is also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.
