Unclear whether the date refers to specimen collection date or date of painting. Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History was named in 1877, and moved from Normal to Urbana in 1884. The Report of the Director for the Year Ending June 30, 1880 (p. 3 https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/61860220) lists 56 oil sketches of 56 species of fish used for coloring casts of fishes for the Illinois State Museum; the artist is not attributed.
