Oil on unstretched, cut canvas painting; Stenciled on back "Ill. State Lab. nat. Hist. Normal, Ill." In pencil on front (bottom center) "(new name) Ictiobus urus" and (bottom right) "Bubalicthys niger." Tip of dorsal fin is cropped off.
Notes
Some items in the series are dated 1878-1880; there is no date on this item. The Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History was named in 1877, and moved from Normal to Urbana in 1884. The Report of the Director for the Year Ending June 30, 1880 (p. 3 https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/61860220) lists 56 oil sketches of 56 species of fish used for coloring casts of fishes for the Illinois State Museum; the artist is not attributed.
