Title | Brick, part of north chimney of Lincoln Home |
Description | Painted chimney brick located May 1986. Stretcher and header on one side painted light chocolate brown with some mortar remnants. Very dirty, some chips. L 8 1/2" x W 4 1/16" x D 2". |
Interpretation | Brick was part of north chimney that was partially covered up when a new roof was put on the Lincoln Home, possibly in the 1880s. The fireplace and chimney were built in the 1840s when a back parlor/bedroom was added on to the house. When the second floor was added in 1855-56, the chimney went through Mary Lincoln's bedroom. The chimney was probably painted with the house color either in the 1840s or 1856. |
