Description | Light blue two-leaf folio, begins: "Spring ___/Dec. 28th 1847/Hon. A. Lincoln/ Dear Sir./ I hope that I shall not trespass too much upon your time..." Signature is missing due to loss of paper, along with paper at all four corners. Several small holes in body of letter, and areas of discoloration. L 9 7/8" x W 7 7/8". |
Interpretation | A request made seeking assistance in obtaining "A commssion in the Army." As a politician, Lincoln must have received hundreds, or even thousands, of similar letters each year. This letter was found in the walls of the Lincoln Home during the 1987-1988 restoration. |
