Description | Roofing shingle made from milled wood. Distinct grain on wide part, weathered to almost black color. Found during 1987-1988 restoration. L 5 11/16" x W 1 1/8" x D 1/4". |
Interpretation | This shingle is believed to have been installed on the roof of the 1848 Abraham Lincoln bedroom in the northwest corner of the house, and was left in a ceiling cavity over the bedroom (converted by the Lincolns to the Back Parlor) after the Lincolns added on a second story in 1855-56. |
