| Interpretation | Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest once summed up his military theory as "Get there first with the most men." This axiom was never more true than during World War II as the movement of troops and supplies were of paramount importance with the Allies fighting on two fronts. Transportation took on a tremendous significance and railroads became one of the major war enterprises in the United States. Chicago, with twenty-two trunk line roads, was the hub of the American railway system so it should be no surprise that in 1940 Illinois employed 104,044 railroad workers (about ten percent of the railroad workers in the United States.)
