Interpretation | Jacques Marquette was born in Laon, France, in 1637. He became a Jesuit priest and went to New France (Canada) as a missionary at the age of twenty-three. He learned the language of the Illinois Indians and founded a mission at St. Ignace, Michilmackinac (Mich.). In May 1673 Marquette and Louis Jolliet, a French Canadian explorer set out to find the Mississippi River, which the Indians had described. They were successful in finding it and traveled as far south as the mouth of the Arkansas River |
