Title | Dry sink from Early Victorian Springfield, IL |
Description | Zinc-lined dry sink washstand. Bracket feet, bottom divided into panelled cupboard and two drawers, one false, one real, and side-by-side on top of cubboard. Interior has one section deeper than other. Hinged top folds down. L 30" x H 30 1/2" x W 17". |
Interpretation | Used in a similar manner to a modern sink. Water was retrieved from the well with a bucket and then poured in the deeper basin of the sink. When finished, a stopper would be removed from the bottom of the basin, allowing the water to drain back into a bucket, ready to be used or disposed of as needed. |
