Description | Shadow box containing human hair wreath. Hair is braided and made into three branch wreath w/bows and flowers and cones. Frame has flowers applied at compass points, molded using paper ache in part. Box measure: L 19 1/2" x W 16 1/2". |
Interpretation | Hair wreaths were common keepsakes of loved ones, living or deceased. They declined with the increasing popularity and affordability of daguerrotypes, and later, photographs. It was a mark of a well-bred lady to be able to weave hair into flowers. |
