| Interpretation | The first Series E U.S. Savings Bond was purchased by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 1, 1941. During WWII war bonds were a source of monetary income for the United States government. Americans were urged to buy war bonds and war savings stamps. Purchasing bonds was considerd not only patriotic, but also an investment in victory. While the initial goal of selling war bonds was to finance the war, it had the positive side-effect of raising morale on the home-front. By the end of the war 85 million Americans had invested in war bonds. The 5th war loan campaign began on June 12, 1944 with a goal of $16 billion. When this campaign ended on Jluy 8m 1944, $20.6 billion worth of bonds had been sold. In the upper left corner of this poster is a reference to the USS Dorado. The USS Dorado (SS-248), a Gato class diesel-powered submarine, was launched on May 23, 1943, commissioned on August 28, 1943, set sail for Pearl Harbor on October 6, 1943 and was lost with all hands, due to friendly fire, on October 12, 1943, in the Caribbean Sea. The last persons to see the USS Dorado were the pilot, co-pilot, and bombardier of a PBM aircraft attached to Patrol Squadron 210 out of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - just before they dropped three Mark-47 depth charges and a 100 pound Mark-4 Mod-4 demolition bomb on her. At the subsequent Board of Investigation in Guantanamo Bay and the more formal Court of Inquiry at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., the aircrew swore they had bombed a German U-boat. After World War II, the confiscated logbook of the German U-boat U-214 conatined recorded proof that the PBM aircraft had bombed the USS Dorado. The submarine has never been found. |
