| Interpretation | General O. M. Poe, to whom was entrusted the duty of completing the destruction inaugurated by Hood, executed his orders to the entire satisfaction of General Sherman. The tools for the destruction of the railroad were invented by General Poe. By the use of these simple tools the iron was rendered entirely unserviceable without calling on the men for severe labor usual upon the destruction of roads.” Barnard, George N.
