| Interpretation | General Sherman left the line of the Savannah river early in February, 1865, and occupied Columbia, S. C., on the morning of the 17th. The sights of this day will never be forgotten by those who witnessed the devastation and suffering caused by the burning of the city. The yet unfurnished edifice, which was to have been the Capitol of the State of South Carolina, was one of the few building of any pretension that escaped the flames.
