| Interpretation | General McPherson, unattended except by a single orderly, rode rapidly down the line toward the point of attack. The General, supposing that the Sixteenth Corps had connected with the Seventeenth, followed the continuation of the line of the latter corps, and by so doing went through the space left between the left of Seventeenth and right of the Sixteenth Corps directly into the rebel line. He was killed instantly by a musket bullet fired by one of a small squad of skirmishers. These did not obtain possession of his body, which was soon conveyed to the rear by members of his staff.
