Title | Guardian of water |
Description | Sculpture, granite, 12 feet in height |
Interpretation | Example of a Works Progress Administration/Federal Arts Project sculpture. The woman’s body is based on the fluted water-storing column of a spiky native southwestern cactus. The jar she is carrying is shaped like the water gourds once used on desert trails. The artist comments: “The fountain base and supporting basin designs were founded on the idea of concentric ripples caused by water falling, drop by drop, into a still pool…a drum eight feet in diameter rises to support the granite transitional base under the figure. The textural effect of mosaic is repeated on the drum to stress the theme of the importance of water, Symbolic clouds pour water into dams and onto citrus groves.” For more information on the WPA/FAP see image: Holger Cahill. |
