| Interpretation | By the end of the 1920's, exposure of the legs, and a considerable portion of the rest of the body, was very much in fashion on the beaches of the Riviera and California. Tanned skin was, for the first time, in vogue. By the late 1920s one-piece jersey bathing suits had been become not only smaller but often were completely backless, had pieces scooped out of the sides, and were held up by narrow shoulder straps or halter necks. Two-piece bathing suits existed by 1929. As shown in these fashion photographs, those trends continued through the 1930’s. |
