Interpretation | Examples of tools used to process the whales. Spades were used to cut holes through the blubber so that it could be pulled away from the flesh. The blubber pike was used to do the actual pulling away of the flesh. The boarding knife was then used to slice the blubber into strips. For a description of catching and processing the whale see Chapter 10 of “Whaling in New Jersey by Harry B. Weiss, 1974 and pages 33-37 of “Whale Ships and Whaling” by Albert Cook Church, 1960 edition. |
