Title | Texas engine #854, Chicago Great Western Railroad |
Description | Photograph, b/w |
Interpretation | Despite major cutbacks in personnel at the beginning of the decade, employment levels at the Chicago Great Western remained generally stable. The volume of freight and passenger business increased as the decade progressed and the railroad recalled or hired many workers. Fares were slashed to increase passengers. A thirty-day round trip coach ticket cost as little as 1 4/5 cents per mile. |
