Interpretation | This engine was modified in 1937 to give crews an added measure of grade-crossing safety. The charter of the Chicago and Alton railroad was granted February 27, 1847. Linking Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City this railroad connected the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River and thus played a vital role in the economic development of the Midwest. |
