Your Boy is on the Coal Pile Now Verse: “I just received your letter,” wrote a small boy one day, “And mother it was good to hear from home. But you say that you worry and ev’ry night you pray, That when I sail I’ll safely cross the foam. I’ve just finished training, and now I have been sent To a shipping regiment.” Refrain: “So weep no more, dear mother, I’m working on the coal pile now, I shovel all day, But nothing moves away, And Oh! how the sweat runs off my brow. I joined the Navy to sail across the sea, But somebody went and wished a shovel on me, Oh say, can you imagine, mother, Your boy is on the coal pile now!” Verse: “You write that you are worried ‘bout that new diseases up here, Oh me I’m sure it will never get a hold, For really mother darling, it may sound very queer, I haven’t got the time to catch a cold. But I don’t mind mother, for soon I’ll get a chance To sail for dear old France.” Refrain
