The Star of Glory Verse: Tell me the meaning of that single star, That hangs in the window over there. Tell me the meaning, mother dear, Ere I kneel for my evening pray’r. The mother’s eyes brimm’d o’er with tears, For her heart was far away. So she told her child of tender years, What the little star seem’d to say: Refrain: That star represents Old Glory, It speaks to each mother’s heart. It shows there is one in service, Who plays a soldiers part. All that we see in that emblem fair, Tells of our boys “over there” That is the meaning of star and flag! Let us kneel my child in pray’r. Verse: Safe on her pillow the dear child was placed, With her mother’s fond goodnight caress. Off to the distant slumber land, Her daddy’s lips once more to press. She’ll bring her daddy back with her, Home from battlefields to stay. Could she only stay in sweet dream-land, She’d have him with her ev’ry day. Refrain
