The map follows a common and--from a twenty-first century perspective--strange line of reasoning, which considered Britain's imperialism unjust not from the perspective of the colonized but rather vis-a-vis other European powers that had lost colonial possessions to Britain. To that end, the key describes 'England vergröß sich auf Kosten' (England enlarged at the expense of...) and the map includes tables providing data regarding land lost by Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, France, the Americas (though not the United States), and the Ottoman Empire. Though the map is in German and the audience was thus local, the message of the map is not that Britain has specifically robbed Germany but that Britain is generally a global bad actor.
