Interpretation | Orchard Knob was attacked, and carried on the afternoon of 23d of November. . . .During the progress of the battle [Mission Ridge] Generals Grant and Thomas occupied Orchard Knob as a position from which to observe and direct the movements of troops. It was in this fight that one of General Grant's staff was wounded, the first casualty that had occurred to a member of the General's staff during the war. Barnard, George N.
