Description
Charles Tinker wrote this letter to James R.B. Van Cleave, explaining that in 1857 Abraham Lincoln visited the Tazewell House hotel in Pekin, Illinois, where Tinker was employed as a telegraph operator, and that Tinker showed Lincoln the operation of a telegraph. Tinker wrote that he joined the United States Army during the Civil War, and met Lincoln again while Tinker served as a cipher operator in Washington, D.C.
