Black horsehair-upholstered rocking chair with partially upholstered arms. Back curved, ending in slight scroll. Arms curve around to front and back, up to underside of arms, with fleur de lis and curved design. Bottom edge of front seat rail has molded rim, back legs bowed slightly to rocker, front less so. Letter from A.S. Coe to Samuel A. Jones dated September 29th, 1863 describing the battle of Gettysburg. Samuel A. Jones was a homeopathic physician and scholar of American Transcendentalism. He served as a Civil War surgeon.

Basic circular shape spittoon, with 12 ribs, pinched waist around outside, top sloped downward and into round opening 6.5 cm in diameter. Finish is Bennington-style, brown, gold, and cream speckled. Drain opening near top rim, some crazing, chips of finish out of rim. Diam. 14 1/4" x H 6 5/8".
