The Hartford Public Library dates back to 1774. For 114 years, 1842-1956 it was located in the Wadsworth Atheneum. Building was opened January 2, 1957. Staff about 150. Cost, equipped $2,900,000.00 -- This unique building spans a 104 ft. wide, four-lane expressway with the heaviest girders ever made in the United States.
