Caption on the back reads: "The Norfolk Public Library is located in the industrial part of the city, on the corner of Freemason and Thomas Streets. It was opened to the public on November 21st, 1904, the work having been started June 24th, 1903. Mr. Andrew Carnegie gave $50,000 toward the cost.

The lower level is to be a Chapel consisting of Chancel Sculpture and Stone Alter for use by all creeds.

This small independent liberal arts college for women, opened in 1906, has a 2800-acre campus, formerly Sweet Briar Plantation. The Mary Helen Cochran Library, given by Fergus Reid in 1929, now contains more than 83,000 volumes.

There are 97 study carrels, 6 seminar rooms, listening room for all types of recordings, film viewing and photo duplication laboratory.
