  • One letter from American journalist William James Stillman to William Allingham writing to introduce his friend Professor Langley, also known as Samuel Pierpont Langley, who he writes is one of the leading astronomers in the United States. Stillman writes that on Langley's return to London, he would like the opportunity to meet Mr. Carlyle. Stillman says that he could think of no better man for Langley to contact, as Allingham knows Carlyle so well. Stokes writes that he is glad to hear of Allingham's recovery from his bronchitis, and mentions that their friend Samuel Ferguson had also recovered from a severe illness. Stokes mentions Allingham's work "Abbey Assaroe," and offers suggestions to the work. He apologizes to Allingham that he does not know anyone at Trinity College Dublin who "cares about Art and Poetry and all that." He writes that he does not know John Ingram, but mentions his acquaintances John Gwynn and George Ormsby. Stokes mentions that the only mistakes in the text are the ones which Allingham intentionally included. Stokes inquires about the use of the word "chrisom" which Stokes mentions is the cloth put over newly baptized children. Stokes inquires about several other word choices in Allingham's book. He mentions that he has been reading American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson's book "Humble Bee," and describes it as having a bit of "Yankee Exaggeration."   • One letter from American journalist William James Stillman to William Allingham writing to introduce his friend Professor Langley, also known as Samuel Pierpont Langley, who he writes is one of the leading astronomers in the United States. Stillman writes that on Langley's return to London, he would like the opportunity to meet Mr. Carlyle. Stillman says that he could think of no better man for Langley to contact, as Allingham knows Carlyle so well.
