Note
  • he published a mighty work in three enormous volumes on naval architecture, which was not a success, and he built the vast dome of the Vienna Exhibition in 1873, which was." (Hamilton)
  • [1] Motto: "Depressus extollor" = Having been depressed, I am now exalted [2] Designer's name from Hamilton. [3] Russell "built the ill-fated Leviathan, afterwards known as the Great Eastern, which was unfortunate from it very birth
