[The motto, "Pike's Peak or bust," rang out across the United States after gold was first discovered in the western portion of the Kansas Territory in 1858. Over 100,000 hopeful prospectors from around the country (and world) would ultimately make their way to the gold fields of modern Colorado by rail, road, and hoof. This timetable and route map was issued on behalf of the Great Western Railway, an Ontario line that operated between the suspension bridge at Niagara Falls and Windsor, opposite Detroit. It connected eastern routes via the New York Central to the Michigan Central and onto Chicago, one of the major hubs for travel west during the 19th century. This is just the first portion of the journey, however, and the map extends into Nebraska, Kansas, and, eventually the 'Kanzas Gold Fields' found just north of Pike's Peak, one of the most recognizable regional landmarks. In addition to prospectors, the railroad ferried settlers during the period known as Bleeding Kansas, a series of armed conflicts arising from popular sovereignty and the issue of slavery in newly admitted states. On the verso are timetables and rates of fare. Published by Smith & Demoreau and printed by Fred Rogers in Boston.]--Description, Curtis Wright Maps, edited for clarity.
