  • Caption: "Branch Settlement House near Old Commons." From text: "The appeal of the child life of the traffic crowded streets and ill equipped homes, won the first response from our hearts and home. There were then neither place nor provision for the littlest children in the public schools. So we determined to lay the foundation of our work in the kindergarten. .. . When the winter kindergarten closed, a summer kindergarten was demanded by the neighborhood, and when we opened our school at the new building, we reopened the kindergarten for the old neighborhood in the new quarters at 75 Grand avenue. ... The influence of the new environment is felt in the sweet, wholesome spirit, which has grown during the year and is greater than was found possible in the old accommodations. In the old neighborhood at 75 Grand avenue the double store, which was renovated and adapted to the purposes of the school, affords a clean, bright and cheery child-garden, at the heart of the most dismal and dirty section of the ward. Two resident kindergartners are in charge of the fifty and more Italian and German children in daily attendance, and of the Mothers' meetings and other settlement work centering at that river-district branch."
